Abuja Becomes Nigeria’s Capital

Date: December 12, 1991.

The plan to change the capital of Nigeria from Lagos to Abuja was made because of its location on the Nigerian map. It was a land in the centre of the country and it could serve as a neutral area for ethnic and religious diversity.  On December 21, 1991, General Ibrahim Babangida announced that Abuja was officially the capital of Nigeria.
