Date: August 26, 1993.
The persistent June 12 crisis caused General Babangida to step down in August 1993. Babangida promulgated a decree setting up an Interim National Government presided over by Ernest Shonekan. As interim president, Shonekan’s first action was to make Abiola his vice president, but Abiola declined the appointment, citing the interim government as illegal. The crisis continued for months, resulting in a coup by General Sani Abacha.
