Clifford Constitution Introduced

Date: March 12, 1922.

The Clifford Constitution was introduced in 1922 and was named after Nigeria’s governor general at the time, Sir Hugh Clifford, who took over from the former governor, Lord Lugard. The constitution made room for a new legislative council and executive council which was a replacement of the abolished old legislative council for Lagos colony and the Nigerian council. The constitution is notable for introducing an elective principle which bolstered the consciousness and nationalism in Nigeria.
