Completion of the Port Harcourt Refinery

Date: June 1, 1965.

In 1965, Nigeria completed its first oil refinery in Port Harcourt to reduce dependence on imported petroleum products. The refinery was established as a joint venture between the Federal Government of Nigeria (60% ownership) and Shell-BP (40%). Located in Alesa-Eleme, it had an initial processing capacity of 35,000 barrels per day, producing essential fuels like gasoline, kerosene, and diesel.

The refinery played a crucial role in Nigeria’s petroleum industry by enhancing energy security, generating revenue, creating jobs, and fostering industrial growth. However, challenges such as maintenance issues, political instability, and fluctuating crude supply later affected its operations.

In the 1970s, the Nigerian government took full control of the refinery under the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). Despite later struggles, the 1965 Port Harcourt refinery remains a landmark achievement in Nigeria’s oil history, shaping future policies for local refining and energy independence.
