The Counter-coup of 1966 was another significant military coup in Nigeria. It was planned and led by Lt. Colonel Murtala Muhammed and many other soldiers of Fulani and Hausa origin. The coup started as a rebellion at midnight on 29 July 1966 and was revenge for the death of Northern politicians and soldiers on 15 January 1966. The coup led to the death of Nigeria’s first military leader, General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi and Lt Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi in Ibadan by angry soldiers.
