Ojukwu abandoned the war, fleeing to Ivory Coast. His second in charge, Philip Effiong, was tasked with handling every aspect of the surrender to General Yakubu Gowon of the Nigerian Army on 13 January 1970. The surrender document was ratified on 14 January 1970 in Nigeria’s capital, marking the end of the civil war and the revocation of secession. However, violence continued for a few days after, with the Nigerian forces taking hold of the remaining Biafran-held towns.
