On 15 January 1966, Kaduna Nzeogwu led some soldiers in Nigeria’s first military coup. 22 people were killed. Some politicians who died during the coup included the prime minister of Nigeria, Premier Ahmadu Bello, Premier Samuel Ladoke Akintola and Finance Minister Festus Okotie-Eboh. The coup plotters laid siege to various Nigerian towns including Kaduna, Ibadan, and Lagos while also stopping activities on the Niger and Benue Rivers within a 48-hour timespan, before being defeated by loyalist forces.
