1961 British Cameroons referendum

Date: February 11, 1961.

A United Nations referendum was held in the British Cameroons on 11 February 1961 to determine whether the territory should join neighboring Cameroon or Nigeria. This followed an earlier plebiscite in the Northern Cameroons in 1959, which voted to postpone a decision.

The result of the referendum is as follows:

  • Northern Cameroons voted to join Nigeria, with the formal union taking effect on 1 June 1961.
  • Southern Cameroons voted to unite with the Republic of Cameroon, officially joining on 1 October 1961, forming what became known as the Federal Republic of Cameroon.

The 1961 referendum remains a significant event in the political and historical landscape of Cameroon, Nigeria, and West Africa.
