Richard Constitution Introduced

Date: July 11, 1946.

The British government introduced the Richard constitution for Nigeria in 1946. It was named after the Governor-General at the time, Sir Arthur Richards, who was tasked with its creation and implementation. Although it retained governmental powers in the hands of the Governor-General and his appointed Executive Council, it is known for creating more seats in the Legislative Council, which has empowered many Nigerians to deliberate on important issues in the country. It also set up three regional Houses of Assembly to cater for local issues and make recommendations to the lieutenant governor. The Richards Constitution acknowledged the country’s ethnic diversity by introducing regionalism. This divided instead of united the country.
