He entered the House in 2019 and was returned at the 2023 general election, sitting initially with the Peoples Democratic Party before defecting to the APC in July 2025, a move he attributed to internal crisis in his former party.
Idem's constituency programmes have centred on education and skills, including annual undergraduate scholarship schemes and batches of young constituents sent for technical training in China; the University of Uyo named a male hostel after him in January 2026. He won the APC ticket for Ukanafun/Oruk Anam with 36,768 votes at primaries in May 2026.
