Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan represents Yobe North in the Senate on the All Progressives Congress platform, a seat he has held since 2007. Since 8 August 2023 he has chaired the Senate Committee on Defence in the 10th National Assembly.
Lawan was a member of the House of Representatives for the Bade/Jakusko Federal Constituency from 1999 to 2007 before moving to the Senate, where he was re-elected in 2011, 2015 and 2019. He served as Senate Majority Leader from January 2017 to June 2019 and as the 14th President of the Senate from 11 June 2019 to 11 June 2023, when he was succeeded by Godswill Akpabio. He was conferred with the national honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger in October 2022.
As of August 2026, Lawan had emerged the APC consensus candidate for Yobe North for a sixth term following a primary held on 18 May 2026; a suit challenging that nomination was before the courts, with hearings fixed for June and July 2026.
