Saliu Mustapha represents Kwara Central Senatorial District, Kwara State, on the platform of the All Progressives Congress. He assumed office on 13 June 2023 at the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly, having won the party's 2022 senatorial primary against the incumbent, Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe. It is his first term in the Senate.
Mustapha was National Deputy Chairman of the Congress for Progressive Change from 2011 to 2013, before that party merged into the All Progressives Congress, and had earlier held positions in the All Nigeria Peoples Party and the Progressive Action Congress. On 8 August 2023 he was named chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture Production Services and Rural Development.
As of August 2026, Mustapha remains the senator for Kwara Central.
