About Senator Tokunbo Abiru
Tokunbo Abiru has represented Lagos East Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate since December 2020, when he won a by-election held on 5 December that year on the All Progressives Congress platform. He was returned at the February 2023 general election and is therefore one of the returning members of the 10th National Assembly, rather than a first-term senator.
Abiru spent most of his career in banking. He was an executive director at First Bank of Nigeria from 2013 to 2016, then group managing director of Polaris Bank, appointed after the Central Bank of Nigeria's 2016 intervention that converted the former Skye Bank into Polaris. He was Lagos State Commissioner for Finance from 2011 to 2013 under Governor Babatunde Fashola. On 8 August 2023 he was named chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking.
