Victor Chukwunonyelu Umeh has represented Anambra Central Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate since 13 June 2023, elected in February 2023 with 103,608 votes against the incumbent Uche Ekwunife's 49,532. He had earlier held the same seat for a partial term, winning a 2018 by-election with 64,879 votes before losing the 2019 contest.
Umeh was national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance from 2002 to 2022, a period in which the party won the Anambra governorship in 2013 and 2017 and the Imo governorship in 2011, working with Peter Obi, Willie Obiano and Rochas Okorocha. He left APGA for the Labour Party in 2022. On 8 August 2023 he was named chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora.
