The Nigerian Civil War or the Biafran War was a violent conflict between Nigeria and the secessionist Biafran republic. Biafra announced secession from Nigeria in 1967, following a second military coup in 1966. General Yakubu Gowon was the military leader of Nigeria, and Lieutenant Colonel Chukwuemeka “Emeka” Odumegwu Ojukwu was in charge of Biafra. The conflict was driven by political and religious clashes which followed Nigeria’s independence.
