Aburi Accord — Last Chance for Peace

Aburi Accord — Last Chance for Peace
Date: January 5, 1967

On January 4-5, 1967, Nigerian Head of State Yakubu Gowon and Eastern Region Governor Odumegwu Ojukwu met in Aburi, Ghana, for last-ditch peace talks mediated by Ghanaian leader Joseph Ankrah. The two sides agreed to a loose confederation that would give regions greater autonomy and allow the East to manage its own affairs.

The accord collapsed almost immediately. The federal side argued the agreement would effectively dissolve Nigeria, while the East accused Gowon of reneging on what was agreed. The phrase “On Aburi We Stand” became a rallying cry in the Eastern Region. The failure of Aburi made the civil war virtually inevitable — within five months, Biafra declared independence and the war began.
