Fela Kuti Wins Posthumous Grammy Lifetime Award
Date: January 31, 2026

On January 31, 2026, Nigerian music legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti was posthumously awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles — becoming the first African artist to receive the honour. The Recording Academy recognized Fela alongside Whitney Houston, Cher, Chaka Khan, and Paul Simon. His children Yeni, Kunle, Shalewa, and Femi Kuti accepted the award on his behalf.

Fela, who died in 1997, created the Afrobeat genre in the 1960s by fusing funk, jazz, and traditional Yoruba rhythms with radical political lyrics that challenged military dictatorship and corruption in Nigeria. His 1976 album Zombie was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2025. Femi Kuti said in his acceptance speech: “Thank you for bringing our father here. It’s so important for Africa. It’s so important for world peace and struggle.” Fela’s influence spans generations — from Burna Boy and Wizkid to Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar.
