300% Electricity Tariff Hike for Band A
Date: April 3, 2024
On April 3, 2024, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) raised electricity tariffs for Band A consumers from ₦66/kWh to ₦225/kWh — a 241% increase. Band A customers, representing about 15% of electricity consumers, are those receiving 20 or more hours of power supply daily.
The tariff hike was part of the government’s plan to make the power sector financially sustainable and attract investment. It sparked widespread outrage and became one of the triggers for the NLC/TUC nationwide strike in June 2024.
