President Bola Ahmed Tinubu swore in Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on 23 October 2025 at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The National Council of State had unanimously approved his nomination on 9 October 2025, and the Senate screened and confirmed him on 16 October 2025. Amupitan, a professor of law, succeeded Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who completed his ten-year tenure in October 2025. At his screening he promised an audit of INEC's operations, including what went wrong with the Result Viewing Portal (IReV) in the 2023 presidential election. Tinubu named the Anambra governorship election of 8 November 2025 as the first test of his leadership.
