“End Bad Governance” Nationwide Protests
Date: August 1, 2024
On August 1, 2024, thousands of Nigerians took to the streets across the country to protest the worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation. The protests, tagged #EndBadGovernance, were triggered by record inflation nearing 35%, the removal of fuel subsidies, and the devaluation of the naira under President Tinubu’s economic reforms.
The protests ran primarily from August 1 to 10. Amnesty International reported at least 13 protesters were killed by security forces, while curfews were imposed in several states. Authorities later charged 10 arrested protesters with treason.
