Introduction of Sharia Law in Northern Nigeria
Date: October 27, 1999

On October 27, 1999, the former governor of  Zamfara State, Ahmed Sani Yerima, introduced Sharia law in the northern section of the country. Shortly thereafter, eleven states in Northern Nigeria, which have predominantly Islamic religious adherents, made similar moves. This includes states like Kaduna, Zamfara, Borno and Niger. Christians in the country were displeased with the activities of the governors of those states.
