Lagos Blue Line Rail Begins Operations

The Lagos Blue Line, Nigeria’s first operational metro rail system, commenced commercial service on September 4, 2023. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu became the first passenger at the Marina Station during the inaugural trip, with five stations opened: Marina, National Theatre, Orile Iganmu, Suru Alaba, and Mile 2.

The 13-kilometre rail line had been planned since 1983 and suffered decades of funding and administrative delays. Regular passenger operations began the following day, running during peak hours.
