On 27 August 1985, Major General Ibrahim Babangida, the army chief of staff, took charge of soldiers to overthrow Buhari’s regime in a coup while Buhari was on a trip outside Lagos and his trusted confidant, Major General Tunde Idiagbon, was on a hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.
