Date: April 7, 2014

In 2014, Nigeria became the biggest economy in Africa after it rebased its GDP (gross domestic product) data. At the time it hadn’t been calculated in over 20 years.

Government data for 2013, as shown by Nigeria’s Bureau of Statistics, places the country’s GDP at $503bn (£307bn) – two times the old estimates and surpassing South Africa at around $350bn.
