Supreme Court Upholds Tinubu’s Election
Date: October 26, 2023
On October 26, 2023, Nigeria’s Supreme Court unanimously dismissed appeals by Atiku Abubakar (PDP) and Peter Obi (Labour Party) challenging President Bola Tinubu’s February 25, 2023 election victory. The seven-member panel upheld the Presidential Election Petition Court verdict, with Justice John Okoro declaring each appeal lacked merit.
The court rejected opposition claims regarding electronic transmission of results, Tinubu’s alleged failure to meet the 25% vote threshold in Abuja, and allegations of forged academic credentials. Tinubu had won with 8.7 million votes (37%), ahead of Atiku’s 6.9 million and Obi’s 6.1 million.
