About Senator Austin Akobundu
Austin Akobundu, listed officially as Augustine Akobundu, has represented Abia Central in the Nigerian Senate since 15 November 2023. The Court of Appeal declared him winner of the 2023 election on 4 November 2023, nullifying the return of the Labour Party's Darlington Nwokocha, then Senate Minority Whip; the Supreme Court affirmed the outcome in December 2023. Akobundu took the seat on the Peoples Democratic Party platform, resigned from the PDP in March 2026 and joined the African Democratic Congress.
Akobundu is a retired Nigerian Army colonel. He served as Minister of State for Defence in the Goodluck Jonathan administration and was National Organising Secretary of the PDP.
As of August 2026, Akobundu holds the Abia Central seat and has submitted an ADC nomination form for the 2027 election.
