About Senator Rufai Sani Hanga
Rufai Sani Hanga has represented Kano Central in the Nigerian Senate since 13 June 2023, when the 10th National Assembly was inaugurated. He took the seat on the New Nigeria Peoples Party platform after the Supreme Court, on 10 March 2023, set aside Ibrahim Shekarau's emergence as the party's Kano Central candidate and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to recognise Hanga in his place.
An accountant by training, Hanga had held the same Kano Central seat once before, in the Senate of 2003-2007. In the 10th Senate he serves as Deputy Minority Whip.
As of August 2026, Hanga remains the senator for Kano Central. He left the NNPP for the NDC in May 2026 and resigned from the NDC on 3 August 2026 without naming a new party.
